Associate Medical Director – Remote and Rural Strategy

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

James is the Associate Medical Director for the newly created Remote and Rural Strategy at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust. This exciting work has many approaches, but the key aim is to improve the recruitment and retention of medical staff in East Kent and create high value jobs by recognising the part that an acute health care provider has to play in the local community. The work also recognises the unique challenges faced in more remote and rural and coastal areas such as East Kent while embracing the huge advantages of living and working in this beautiful region. This work involves working closely with local, regional and national partners and builds on James’ work in his previous role as Senior Strategy and Policy Lead at NHS England and NHS Improvement as part of the People Directorate. James balances this role alongside clinical responsibilities in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care.

He has also previously been a Darzi Fellow, where he worked towards ensuring the citizen voice is at the heart of decision-making in the use of digital tools and artificial intelligence and has previously published on this subject. As a result of this work, James is also a member of the taskforce for the All Party Parliamentary Group for Artificial Intelligence and obtained a PG Cert in Clinical Leadership.

James also has experience across a wide range of industries aligned to clinical medicine. He has experience working in the pharmaceutical industry, and he also worked at King’s College London as a Clinical Tutor where he obtained a PG Cert in Clinical Education.
