Integrated Care Seminar & Study Series

Background to the Integrated Care Study Series
The NHS Next Stage Review and associated strategy for primary care published in 2008 highlighted the pressing need to improve care to cope with the aging population and increasing prevalence of chronic, complex ill-health. In particular, the Review highlighted the need to improve integration between different health care providers and between health and social care. This is seen as a way to improve patient experience, reduce care consumption and improve health outcomes. Service integration is a key theme in current health and social care policy. The Department of Health (DH) announced its intention to create a cluster of integrated care organisation (ICO) pilots in July 2008. Thirty seven organisations are currently being assessed with a view to selecting around twenty as ICO pilots.
The Nuffield Trust, in collaboration with Cambridge Health Network and the Royal College of Physicians, ran a study series to learn about integration from high quality health organisations in the USA and to disseminate this learning within the NHS. During the study series we hosted four outstanding leaders of US health care, three of whom were physician- executives. The series explored how their organisations use levers such as governance, incentives, clinician leadership, and data and IT to support and enhance integration towards better quality care. It also explored how to apply learning in NHS organisations wanting to push ahead with the integrated care agenda.
