Speaking at the first in a series of roundtable discussions on competition policy, Professor Carol Propper, Professor of Economics and Public Policy, Imperial College London, provides an overview of how competition works in the NHS in England, the rules under which it operates, and the impact it has had on the quality and cost of care.

Professor Propper considers the implications of recent research on competition for the work of the new economic regulator and the NHS Commissioning Board announced in the government’s NHS White Paper in July 2010.
