Regardless of the differences in funding or delivery models – be they market or government based – both the United States and the NHS face a common challenge in producing better quality information about the purpose of health care: better health.

Health systems, including the NHS, have often been too focused on gathering information about the volume of services rather than the outcome of those services, something which needs to be improved, as Peter Smith, Professor of Health Policy at Imperial College London explains to Nuffield Trust Senior Fellow, Ruth Thorlby.
