Four experts provide their perspective on whether the existing NHS settlement will remain affordable in the long term.

With the NHS facing an unprecedented financial challenge, the service must find ways of delivering more patient care for less. Whether the NHS can rise to the challenge will in part determine its long term sustainability.

With this challenge in mind, the Nuffield Trust and The Royal College of Surgeons of England hosted a debate with some of the most influential figures in health on whether the NHS could further restrict the services it provides to offer a core package of services for all patients.

Speakers included:

  • Dr Clare Gerada, Chair, Royal College of General Practitioners;
  • Professor Julian Le Grand, Richard Titmuss Professor of Social Policy, London School of Economics;
  • Professor Anthony Mundy, Professor of Urology and Consultant Urological Surgeon, and Medical Director, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust;
  • Polly Toynbee, Columnist, The Guardian.

The event was chaired by Branwen Jeffreys, Health Correspondent, BBC News. We tweeted live from this event using the hashtag: #nhsrighttotreatment

This event forms part of the Nuffield Trust project: The quest for efficiency in the English NHS. For further details about this programme of work, visit the dedicated project page.
