How does the UK health system compare with other OECD countries in terms of cost, access and quality?

The NHS in England has grappled with tight budget constraints in recent years, with growing concerns that budget shortfalls might grow as the demand for health care exceeds the funding available. So how does the UK health system compare with other OECD countries in terms of cost, access and quality?

The OECD launched their report Health at a Glance 2015 at an event co-hosted by the Nuffield Trust on the 4 November. The report provides international comparisons of health status, risk factors to health, health expenditure, access to care and quality of care. For the first time, the 2015 edition also includes a set of dashboard indicators summarising the comparative performance of OECD countries on these different dimensions of population health status and health system performance.

The event addressed the following questions:

  1. What have been the main characteristics of health spending growth and public and private financing over the past decade?
  2. What has been the impact of the freeze (or reduction in some countries) in health spending in recent years on access to care for certain population groups?
  3. What do we know about improvements in the quality of care in the United Kingdom and other OECD countries, and what are some of the key challenges to further improve health care quality and value for money spent in the years ahead?

Mark Pearson, Deputy-Director of the Employment, Labour and Social Affairs Directorate, OECD presented the key findings followed by some reactions from Nigel Edwards, Chief Executive, Nuffield Trust. The event was chaired by Nick Timmins, Senior Fellow, The King's Fund and Senior Associate, Nuffield Trust.

This event brought together a high-level audience of policy professionals and officials, researchers, journalists, health and social care leaders and patient representatives. You can download the report here: www.oecd.org/els/health-systems/health-at-a-glance-19991312.htm
