Quality of care and efficiency of health services are in the spotlight. An independent review by Lord Carter of Coles on NHS efficiencies and a national review of maternity services emphasise the continuing focus on improving quality and efficiency. As the new Government seeks to put the NHS and social care on a long-term, sustainable footing, what are the prospects for quality?

The 2015 annual QualityWatch conference brought together national policy-makers and clinical leaders to discuss the current state of quality, the trends shown by the QualityWatch data and the implications for future quality as NHS and social care services work to deliver the Five Year Forward View under renewed financial pressures.

We looked at the latest findings from the QualityWatch programme and explored topical questions including:

  • What quality and data implications arise from the Five Year Forward View new models of care?
  • How can quality and efficiency be balanced? Is there a trade-off and what is the minimum level of quality we should accept?
  • How can the workforce best meet future quality challenges?

QualityWatch is a joint research programme between the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation. The full agenda for the conference can be found on the QualiyWatch website.
