The Care Quality Commission (CQC) changed how it regulates care services. Ahead of the new ratings system, the CQC and Nuffield Trust hosted a joint roundtable to explore how the new system could work best in practice.
At the discussion Professor Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals, outlined the CQC’s current thinking on the shape of the new ratings system, and sought input from those individuals and organisations that will be impacted by the changes.
This was an opportunity to contribute to the CQC’s plans at an important time when changes are being taken forward to the way it inspects, regulates and monitors care services.
Delegates had the opportunity to discuss topics including:
- Whether ratings should be given at a service, hospital, or trust level;
- If ‘good’ hospitals could be inspected less often;
- What an outstanding hospital looks like;
- How patients might use ratings to secure good care;
- How patients could shape ratings.
The event followed the Nuffield Trust’s review of provider ratings, commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health in November 2012. He asked us to review whether aggregate ratings of provider performance should be used in health and social care, and if so how best this might be done.
A final report was presented to the Government on 22 March 2013.
