This chart uses the latest data to have been made available by the Department of Health at the time of publication (April 2013).

This interactive chart shows the number of attendances at accident and emergency departments in England over the years 1987/88 to 2010/11. The data is broken down into first attendances and unplanned follow-up attendances for the same condition.

While the total number of attendances has been rising over the past decade, the number of unplanned follow-ups has fallen. As a result, the proportion of all attendances that are follow-ups has fallen from 1 in every 5 in the 1980s, to around 1 in 30 in more recent years.

The data for this chart comes from quarterly returns to the Department of Health. This data collection was stopped in January 2012, and while the number of attendances is still reported weekly to the Department, the breakdown between first and follow-up attendances is no longer available. Updates to this data series will therefore not include this breakdown.
