The NHS is heavily reliant on professionally qualified staff with high level clinical skills that take many years to acquire.  These include around 140,000 doctors and more than 300,000 nurses and midwives as well as less well known disciplines such as health care scientists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

HCHS doctors = Hospital and community health services doctors. S T & T staff = Scientific, therapeutic and technical staff.
