The future of health and social care looked to be a defining issue in the 2015 UK general election. Whoever wins will need to grapple with providing joined up health and social care services in an era of continued austerity. To find out how the political parties intend to do this, six of the leading organisations in the sector brought together the health spokespeople from the main parties to take part in the health and care debate.

The debate was jointly organised by the British Medical Association, the Health Foundation, the King’s Fund, National Voices, NHS Confederation and the Nuffield Trust, with the BMJ as our media partner. This debate provided a platform for the parties to explain their policies on health and care to an informed audience of professionals, practitioners, patients and policymakers.

Following opening statements from the parties’ spokespeople, it followed a ‘Question Time’ format, chaired by BBC broadcast journalist, Sarah Montague.
