Do you have a strong grounding in economics or financial analysis? Do you have a demonstrable interest in health and social care policy and an understanding of how public services are funded and financed? Are you a strong critical thinker, with excellent verbal and written communication skills?

The Nuffield Trust is looking for a creative and independent research analyst to undertake work on agreed research projects relating to the funding and financing of health and social care services. You will ensure timely and high-quality delivery working within a team of project leads. You should have a deep understanding of how UK public services are funded and financed, with a demonstrable interest in health and social care policy.

In this role, you will be taking responsibility for small projects or parts of projects, including the research design, planning, development and delivery of research projects; working in collaboration with others within internal and external project teams.

We’d really like to meet you if you have:

  • A first degree in economics (or a similarly quantitative subject).
  • The ability to comprehend and synthesise different official sources of information on health and social care funding and reconcile differences between them.
  • The ability to apply economic methods for analysis and evaluation and advise colleagues on appropriate use within mixed methods projects.
  • The ability to gather, analyse, interpret, and synthesise complex information derived from policy documents, health economic research and broader research studies.

To apply, please go to The Nuffield Trust Recruitment site and complete the online application process by 23:59 on 26 March 2025.

Please submit your CV and a document addressing the following questions:

  1. The NHS in England has a longstanding ambition to shift resources away from hospitals towards community healthcare settings.

We want you to imagine you are responsible for planning and carrying out a Nuffield Trust analysis of this stated policy ambition.

In no more than 600 words, please set out what you think the most important research question is in respect of this ambition, and how you would go about exploring it through a piece of analysis.

To help focus your response we suggest that this analysis should take roughly three months to complete, in a team consisting of yourself plus one quantitative researcher.

In your response you may want to consider:
  • The policy relevance of your chosen research question.
  • What dataset(s) you will draw on.
  • What research and analysis methods you will use.
  1. In no more than 250 words, please explain how your past experiences and particular skills would enable you to successfully complete the analysis you’ve described.
  2. Please list two or three written pieces of analysis you have produced or co-produced, which are most relevant to the role, and briefly outline your involvement. If these are in the public domain, please provide a link or reference. If they are not in the public domain, please very briefly explain their purpose and/or impact.
