In this video, Professor Alan Garber, Henry J. Kaiser Jr. Professor at Stanford University, introduces the Nuffield Trust’s Annual Health Strategy Summit 2011 session on competition and the NHS, with a few reflections on the meaning and scope of competition for NHS policy makers to consider.
Professor Garber talks about some of the dilemmas that the NHS will need to resolve if competition is to be used to benefit health services:
- Competition for what kinds of service?;
- Competition over price or should prices be fixed?;
- How can regulators and policymakers set rules to avoid perverse incentives without choking off technological innovation?
