Launch event for an Institute for Fiscal Studies report, funded by the Nuffield Trust

The path of government funding for health over the next decade is a key concern for commissioners, providers, as well as patients and the public. What can be expected once the unprecedented four-year freeze in NHS spending ends in 2014−15?

The Nuffield Trust and the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) held an exclusive briefing at which the consequences of three distinct but plausible scenarios for NHS and social care spending (post 2014-2015 up until 2021-22) were shared ahead of their public launch the following day. The models assess the trade-offs involved in future spending settlements – specifically their likely effects on the NHS, other public service spending, and taxation.

Rowena Crawford, Senior Research Economist, presented the findings.

An expert panel including Nick Pearce, Director, IPPR; Nick Seddon, Deputy Director, Reform; Sue Slipman OBE, Chief Executive, Foundation Trust Network;  Carl Emmerson, Deputy Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies, discussed the political and financial implications of the Nuffield Trust and IFS findings for both the NHS and wider public sector.

The event was chaired by Anita Charlesworth

The report is the first output from a major programme of research and analysis being taken forward by the Nuffield Trust to measure the scale of the long term financial challenge facing the NHS and social care, and to develop ideas for how this can be met.

At this stage our aim is to provide a substantial contribution to the framing of the debate ahead of the next spending review (due in autumn 2013). Later this year we will publish further research and analysis, aimed specifically at the NHS, that will examine the drivers of demand and supply.
