Johnny Marshall: Supporting clinicians in prioritising care

Published: 24/05/2011

Dr Johnny Marshall, GP and Chairman of the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC), talks to Sian Davies, Nuffield Trust Specialist Trainee in Public Health, about how GPs and other clinicians can manage the dual roles of physician and commissioner, and outlines what he understands to be their main concerns around priority setting.

Dr Marshall offers advice to fellow clinicians who may feel apprehensive about taking on the new role, and considers what can be done at a national level to help them to prioritise the health care that they commission.

Dr Marshall participated in the Nuffield Trust's one-day workshop: Making difficult choices: key issues in priority setting for GP commissioners, held in partnership with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence(NICE) and the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC), in May 2011.
