The main findings from today's data are:

  • The percentage of people spending more than four hours in A&E increased to 15% in December 2017, which is higher than the same month last year.
  • Total A&E attendances surpassed 2 million in December 2017, which is 4% higher than in December last year.
  • Emergency admissions via A&E have been increasing year-on-year, reaching over 392,000 in December 2017.
  • Trolley waits have worsened, with almost 70,000 people spending more than four hours from decision to admit to admission in December 2017.
  • Only three out of 137 major emergency departments met the four-hour A&E target in December 2017.
  • The number of people waiting for hospital admission in England was over 4 million in November 2017, which is a 1% decrease from the previous month. However, the waiting list is still over 50% larger than it was five years ago.
  • The total number of delayed transfer of care days hit 155,000 in November 2017, which is 38,000 lower than it was in November 2016. But there are still over one third more delayed transfer of care days than there were five years ago.
  • In November 2017, over 2,300 patients (17.5%) waited over 62 days from an urgent GP referral to their first treatment for cancer, which is over 45% higher than it was five years ago.

The Nuffield Trust has issued a statement on this data and the NHS's weekly winter operational statistics, which can be read here.
