After gaining a PhD in molecular microbiology in 2006, Dr Mills started in the field of research regulation in 2009. As part of a primary care research office in Norfolk, he initially undertook governance reviews of studies, later moving to other areas such as sponsorship. He joined the HRA in 2014 as part of a team to develop and implement HRA Approval, which fully introduced in 2016. Since then he has been working on various projects to further improve the HRA Approval process. Dr Mills has also worked to make it easier for applicants to undertake research, for example studies that involve senior staff.
