Virtually all of the work has been carried out in close co-operation with the authorities responsible for health services and has arisen out of specific problems. It is an excellent example of the private enterprise of which a University is capable.

Together these essays indicate that the main hope for progress in the field of health services research is close co-operation between the universities which can attract investigators capable of using modern techniques intelligently, and NHS management which has to deal with the immediate and very pressing problems of running a complex service.
