Many countries throughout the world have long realised that information technology offers the prospect of a revolution in their approach to patient care, but although many of the UK's key health initiatives are totally dependent upon information, very little consideration has been given to the development of applied information science in UK health care. The author cites numerous reasons for this failure to make effective use of IT and recommends a number of solutions.
