This investigation's studies fell into three principal groups:

  1. Studies of individual departments;
  2. Studies in physical environment - concerned with questions such as lighting, heating and ventilation, colour, the control of noise and the prevention of fire; and
  3. Study of hospital case-load, i.e. the demand for hospital services arising from the surrounding area.
