We know that accountability is important, but what mechanisms are already in place to scrutinise the NHS? Patricia Day and Rudolf Klein examine three bodies set up to advise and watch the NHS.

As Government moves forward with NHS reorganisation, this report looks at three different institutional innovations designed to improve NHS accountability: the Independent Panel for PCTs; the local authority Overview and Scrutiny Committee; and the Independent Reconfiguration Panel.

Patricia Day and Rudolf Klein examine how effective this machinery will be in the context of the coming reconfiguration and discuss how local and national accountabilities will be reflected.
